A library of your own.

A free reader for the books you already own — a shelf you arrange, not a database you manage.

A book is already on the shelf when you arrive — you're reading within seconds, no account, nothing to set up. No subscription, ever — pay once for everything around it.

The Tomen library, a grid of book and comic covers, with view toggles and reading marks
01

Free and complete

The reader is free — highlights, dictionary, translation, read-aloud, themes, all of it. No trial, no account, no caps. Not a teaser for a paid tier.

02

Local-first

Your library, reading position, highlights and files stay on your device or in your own cloud. Fully offline. Never hosted, never tracked, never locked in.

03

No subscription

Plus is a single purchase — your cloud shelf, sync across devices, PDFs turned into comics. Pay once and it is yours. There is no monthly anything.

Built for people who
keep real libraries.

Everything here is free, forever — the whole reader, not a trial of one. No account, no caps, and nothing that stops working later.

It opens what you already own

EPUB, and the Kindle formats too — MOBI and AZW3, as long as they’re DRM-free. Plus FB2, plain text, HTML and Markdown — and your comics and manga, CBZ, CBR and the rest, on the same shelf. No conversion step and no import wizard: the file you have is the file it reads.

Every format

Set like a book, not a web page

Real typesetting, not a stylesheet: kerning on, old-style figures in the serif, punctuation that hangs into the margin, and a baseline grid the lines actually sit on. Nine reading themes, all free, including the ones for reading in the dark.

The page

Read with a pen in your hand

Highlight a line and write on it. Look a word up without leaving the page, translate a passage, or have the book read aloud to you. All of it free, and none of it asks for an account.

While you read

Nothing you mark is trapped

Highlights leave as plain Markdown, whole and readable. Turn one into a quote card to share, and the Journal keeps the rest — what you read, when, and how far you got.

What you keep

Three views of one shelf

Covers to browse, rows to compare, and a Journal for when you can’t decide what’s next. Sort six ways — including by the colour of the spine, so you find a book the way you do on a real shelf: that one was green.

The shelf

Your whole shelf, in one drag

Drag in a file, a folder, or a whole Calibre library — hundreds import in the background, covers and metadata intact, while you keep browsing. It all leaves the same way: one file holds the lot, and one button puts it back.

In and out

A shelf you can open anywhere

Tag a book private and it leaves your shelf — and the Journal, the search and your notes with it. One switch brings it back, on that device only.

Left out, on purpose

DRM-locked files, which no reader but their own can open

That’s what it does. How you work it is the next thing. See the gestures

Made for
your fingers.

Built touch-first, not adapted to it. There is almost no chrome on a page of Tomen because there doesn’t need to be — every control is a gesture, and the gestures agree with each other. Pinch always resizes. Hold always means keep this. Learn one and you can guess the rest.

Tap

A page turns from its side — the whole edge is the target, so you never have to aim. The centre brings the reading menu in, and takes it away again.

Pinch

Pinch always resizes, and only the thing under your fingers changes: covers in Gallery, rows in Sheet, the size of the type in a book.

Hold

Hold a book for its menu, right on the cover. Hold the centre of a page to keep your place — a thumb between the pages — then tap Return to come back to it.

Swipe up & down

On the shelf, the sort steps forward and back. In a book, down brings the menu; up starts selecting text and down leaves again.

Swipe left & right

In from the left edge for Settings, wherever you are. While you have text selected, they widen or narrow it — word, line, paragraph.

Drag Plus

Drop one book onto another and the two become a collection; drop one onto a collection to add it. The shelf closes the gap behind them.

Comics & manga

Comics and manga bring their own: pinch to zoom into the art and drag to pan, edges that turn the page — flipped for a right-to-left manga — and a layout that can be a single page, a spread, or one continuous scroll.

The page,
tuned to you.

Good out of the box — Auto follows your system — and it rewards tuning. Nine themes and three reading faces are free; save any look as a profile. Accents, four experimental themes and photographic filters come with Plus.

The Salt Year
Marisol Vane

The lamplighter moved house to house as the evening thinned to blue, and where he touched the flame the street woke one window at a time.

She watched from the landing — the hour she liked best, the one she could fold up and keep in a pocket against the colder months.

More, when
you want it.

The reader is free and complete. Plus is for everything around it: your Dropbox shelf, PDFs turned into comics, every device on the same page. One payment, forever.

Dropbox library

A 3 GB library that weighs a few megabytes

Point Tomen at the Dropbox folder your books already live in — a Calibre library, a decade of comics — and the whole shelf appears, sorted and searchable. Nothing downloads until you open a book. Your files never move, and access stays read-only: Tomen can’t change a thing you own.

PDF conversion

Drop in a PDF, read it as a comic

Most graphic novels arrive as PDFs. Tomen turns one into a comic itself — no converter, no second app, no uploading it anywhere. Full quality, on your device; it takes a few minutes and you can keep reading while it works. What comes out is an ordinary comic on the same shelf as the rest.

Cross-device sync

Every device, same page — live

Turn a page on one device and it lands on the others in about a second — position, highlights, notes, tags, collections. Only your reading state travels; your files never leave your device.

Tags

Your own words on every title

Tag a book with whatever it means to you — a mood, a course, a someday — then filter the shelf by any one of them. Your tags follow you across devices.

Collections

Shelves of your own

Group books into custom collections: a series, a course, a to-read pile. They follow you across every device.

Good to know.

Do I need an account?

Not to read. An account is just an email, no password. It only carries your Tomen Plus licence and syncs your reading across devices.

Is my reading private?

Your books, progress and highlights live on your device. No ads, no tracking, nothing sold. Your files are never uploaded. Sync moves only your reading state, scoped to your account.

How does sync work?

With Plus, your position, highlights, notes, tags, wordbook and collections stay in sync. Your other open devices update in about a second. Only your reading state travels; the book files never do.

What does Tomen do with my Dropbox?

It reads it, and nothing more. Tomen asks Dropbox for read-only access — the permission screen will say so — so it cannot edit, move or delete anything, even by accident. You pick the folder in Dropbox’s own window, and a book you open comes straight from Dropbox to your device; no server of ours ever sees it.

Will it read my messy files?

That's the point. Sideloaded EPUBs with broken metadata, odd encodings, big comic archives: Tomen is built for the real-world files a library accumulates, not just pristine ones. DRM-locked files are the one exception.

Can it read PDFs?

Yes — a comic or graphic novel PDF, which is what most of them are. Tomen turns it into pages on your device: no separate converter, no second app, and nothing is uploaded anywhere. A long one takes a few minutes and you can keep reading while it works. What you get is a comic — fixed pages you can zoom into — not reflowable text, so a text-heavy PDF is better served by an EPUB if one exists. Reading comics is free; converting a PDF into one is part of Plus.

What happens if Tomen goes away?

You keep reading. Tomen is local-first: the reader works offline, your books are on your device, and one file backs up your whole library — the same file restores it, on this device or the next. Every highlight and note exports as plain Markdown besides. If sync ever stopped, you'd lose a convenience, not a page.

Does it work on an e-ink reader?

Yes. Turn on e-ink mode (Settings → Appearance) and Tomen redraws itself for the panel — real borders instead of the faint tints e-ink can’t show, no shadows or frosted glass, stronger quiet text. Your theme, type and layout are untouched. Free, like the rest of the reader.

Is Tomen an AI app?

No. No chatbot, no “summarise this chapter”, no generated anything. Tomen is a reader — it shows you the book and gets out of the way. Dictionary, translation and read-aloud use your device’s own tools, not a model of ours.

What if something's wrong — or missing?

Email [email protected] and a real person answers — bugs get fixed, and good suggestions get built. For purchases, see the refund policy.

Tomen is built by one person. No ads, no tracking, nothing to sell but the reader itself. If something’s broken or missing, tell me — I read every message, and a lot of Tomen exists because a reader asked.

Start reading tonight.

The complete reader is free, no account needed. Tomen Plus is a one-time $39. Yours on every device, forever.
